Dutch At Intermediate Level
For basic users of Dutch
Are you a basic user of Dutch and would you like to be able to take part in conversations about familiar topics with your Dutch friends, colleagues or neighbors, and speak with more confidence?
The Start Learning Dutch Intermediate courses (Intermediate 1 + 2) will help you improve your Dutch-speaking fluency and give you a solid foundation of the Dutch language.
Intermediate courses:
Intermediate 1 + 2
Entry level:
Basic user of Dutch
Goal:
The intermediate level consists of two courses: Intermediate 1 and 2. In these two courses you will work from level A2 toward level B1 (on the Common European Framework of Reference)
What:
Online Zoom lessons in small groups up to 6 students; each course level consists of 12 x 2h15min classes, 1 lesson a week
Approximate self-study time:
2/3 hours a week
Who:
Students are professionals, such as expats and their partners, international students, and others who wish to learn Dutch fast and within a limited time frame. Students need to be able to speak English and have completed secondary education in their country of origin

Intermediate 1
In Intermediate 1 + 2 you will practice all language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The focus is on the active use of practical and useful Dutch that can be used in real-life situations. In these two courses you will expand your vocabulary skills and your grammatical knowledge.
Grammar:
Various grammar topics, such as:
Place words in the correct order in the main clause, in present and past tense:
- Ik ben in het weekend met een vriend naar het theater gegaan.
Place words in the correct order, combining main and subordinate clauses, and choosing the correct conjunctions:
- Voordat ze naar buiten ging, deed ze het licht uit.
- Ik ga naar het strand, als het weer goed is.
Construct sentences with the verb ‘zouden’
- Ik zou graag een keer een lange reis willen maken.
- Als ik genoeg geld had, zou ik dat huis kopen.
Use the word(s) ‘(om)te’ before an infinitive:
- Hij probeert zijn fiets te repareren.
- Hij wil zijn fiets repareren.
- Ik vind het te warm om een jas te dragen.
Conjugate separable verbs:
- Ze hangt het schilderij op.
- Wil je het schilderij ophangen?

Use the word ‘er’:
- Ben je in Parijs geweest? Ja, ik ben er geweest.
- Heb je veel boeken? Ja, ik heb er veel.
- Er staat een computer op de tafel.
Use relative pronouns:
- Het boek dat ik lees, is saai.
- De auto waarin ik rijd, is rood.
Construct passive sentences:
- We verkopen ons huis. Ons huis wordt verkocht.
- We hebben de bomen geplant. De bomen zijn geplant.
- De mensen praten hard. Er wordt hard gepraat.
